CHAPLIN
Chaplin - In the Black and White World is a theatrical performance inspired by the life and work of Charlie Chaplin. The project grows out of deep research into his autobiography, his films, and the vast artistic legacy he left behind. The performance functions as a sincere homage to one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century - Charles Chaplin.
The performance speaks to audiences of all ages. One of the actors involved described it perfectly: this is a performance for people from 7 to 77 years old. Everyone can recognize Chaplin, connect with him, enjoy his world, and take from the performance what feels most meaningful to them. Each viewer finds their own Chaplin - through laughter, emotion, memory, or simple joy.
Although the performance communicates with all generations, it is primarily addressed to the youngest audience. The initial impulse for creating this project came from a very personal moment. I watched my two children laughing uncontrollably in front of the television. When I realized they were watching Charlie Chaplin, everything became clear. After the program ended, I immediately searched for more of his films online and showed them again. It quickly became their favorite thing to watch. In that moment, I understood something essential: Chaplin is timeless.
Why is Chaplin timeless? Because he loved his work. Because he enjoyed creating every single day. Because he believed in art - true art - and shared it generously with people. His humor, humanity, and sincerity transcend language, time, and age.
The aesthetic concept of the performance answers an important theatrical question: if we were to place Chaplin - an artist who began in theatre but became primarily associated with film - back onto a theatre stage, what would that look like today? The performance begins in black and white, reflecting the visual language of Chaplin’s films during the period in which he created them. Gradually, the world of the performance begins to gain color. Step by step, the black-and-white universe transforms, becoming closer to our contemporary world, suggesting continuity between past and present.
Chaplin - In the Black and White World is a fusion of theatre and film. It blends live performance, movement, music, projection, and cinematic language into a single stage experience. Above all, it is a heartfelt homage to Chaplin’s life and work, created with love for art, for daily creation, and for sharing joy with others.
This performance celebrates play, imagination, laughter, and kindness. It reminds us why we create, why we tell stories, and why art matters - to be useful, to connect, to entertain, and to make people smile. Exactly as Charlie Chaplin did.
