THE PORTRAIT OF DORIAN GRAY
I have always found something “magical,” something “enchanting,” in the pen of Oscar Wilde. Something different from reality - his own voice, symbolic and metaphorical. Throughout this performance, the expressive language follows that same principle: magical. We use effects designed to enrich the audience’s imagination and help them more easily enter the world of Dorian Gray.
This is a multimedia project, not only to capture that magic through the actors’ performances (though, of course, they are central), but also through choreography and dance, poetic etudes, inventive stage illusions, singing, physical theatre, live drawing, and more. For this reason, it can truly be called a fully multimedia experience.
From a thematic perspective, it is hard to find a subject more relevant today than Wilde’s tale. Everywhere around us, people are consumed with a misplaced obsession with themselves. Without creating anything meaningful in life, without professions or true purpose, they project themselves endlessly on social media - self-absorbed, narcissistic displays that lead nowhere.
This performance therefore also carries a strong social message. It becomes a mirror - a reflection - offering the audience a chance to confront their own vanities, false appearances, and egotistical attitudes. It asks: how far can this path go? To the loss of one’s soul, perhaps - when life is devoted only to material things and empty pleasures, which mean nothing without love. In such surrender, the soul can be lost all too easily, leading toward wrong choices, down a destructive path - even to death.
Visually, the world of the performance is dark, shaded in black and grey, except for a few striking moments of color: in Sibyl Vane, often a symbol of love; in Basil, through hues representing vitality and creation; and elsewhere in symbolic contrasts that carry meaning.
The acting style will remain organic, yet at many points touched with the magical. It is freed from time and space - timeless. A world without boundaries, created by the artistry of the team behind this project: original, unique, a complete artistic creation. It is made solely for the audience’s delight, inviting them into an unforgettable vision of The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
